1991: War in Zagreb - ten wartime testimonies

Exhibition concept: Kristian Strukić
Visual design: Tajana Zver

With its exhibition entitled 1991: War in Zagreb - ten wartime testimonies, the Zagreb City Museum marks the 20th anniversary of the Croatian War of Independence and the drawing up of the Croatian Constitution.

The exhibition is the Museum’s contribution to the commemoration of a year that represented a key milestone in the defence of the Republic of Croatia from aggression. 1991 was also the year when, on the 8th of October, the Croatian Parliament (‘Sabor’) adopted a decision which, following a three-month moratorium, led to the constitution of an independent state.

The exhibition speaks about the people and the City being the capital city and the political, social, economic and strategic centre of the Republic in 1991.

The key structure of the exhibition is composed of six thematic units: Peace Initiatives, The Withdrawal of the Yugoslav Army, The City’s War-Time Clothing, A Voice from Vukovar, Attacks on the City and Zagreb’s Military Forces within the Croatian Army / Leaving for the Battlefield’. The context of these units is provided by ten stories told by participants themselves: Josipa Višnja Milas Matutinović, Marija Slišković, Josip Bistrović, Robert Belošević, Ivan Posilović, Marija Lacko, Nada Premerl, Mladen Kušec, Anđelko Vugrinec and Mišo Žutić. These are people from diverse professional and personal backgrounds such as: peace activists, humanitarian workers, press photographers, a journalist, an organiser of a neighbourhood security unit, a woman working in culture, a war veteran and a camp prisoner.

These units display a diverse collection of material, including personal items of the speakers, and ten video-recordings of their wartime testimonies and one sound recording.
