Dubrava Zagreb - from the suburb to the city

Exhibition concept: Kristian Strukić
Exhibition design: Bilić_Müller Design Studio
Poster and catalogue design: Tajana Zver

The exhibition Dubrava Zagreb – from the suburb to the city presents the area located in the eastern part of Zagreb, which administratively became a part of the City unit in the early 1940’s and late 1950’s. The Dubrava area is shown in its current administrative borders emphasising the core area of Dubrava which is located between Oporovečka St and the extended Branimirova St.

This exhibition presents this area of Zagreb from the moment it received its first urban vistas, when its transformation began, through the changes it underwent from an area of suburban Zagreb villages or suburbs, and onto its current incarnation as a fully-fledged City unit. This transformation is shown through the themes of construction – carried out in accordance with the historical circumstances that went with it, infrastructure – including transportation and utility issues, economy – consisting of shops, small crafts and large commercial entities (among which Jadran Film, Jugoton – now Croatia Records and Zagreb Bus Factory are notable) as well as social themes – not only immigration and organisation of social and cultural life through places such as the lido, the Cinema, the People's University, but also through music, sports etc.

The exhibits follow the process of Dubrava’s development from the time it was an urban resort and hunting ground covered with forests and villages to the time it became one of Zagreb quarters, as well as its further progress within the city: from a sparsely populated area to an area that hosts almost 100,000 inhabitants. It covers the time period from the 1930’s to this very day.

The theme of this exhibition is the creation of the urbanity and urban character of Dubrava as one of Zagreb’s quarters, not only in the construction segment but also in infrastructural, economic and social terms.
