This exhibition of student works dealing with the topic of the change of use of industrial structures, in terms of both function and content, is the result of a collaborative effort between the Architecture Faculty in Zagreb and Zagreb City Museum relating to a project entitled “The Zagreb Industrial Heritage: History, State of Affairs, Outlook”. In the context of research into and promotion of the protection of the industrial heritage, the intention of Zagreb City Museum is to present possible solutions for preservation and high quality conversion that came into being as part of the regular curriculum of the leading Croatian educational institution in the field of architecture and town planning.
The year 1918, a watershed in Croatian history, defines the conclusion of the end of the first phase of the project. Thus the student works presented at the exhibition are interpretations of possible conversions of palaeo-industrial complexes originally designed and developed up to the end of World War I. These are four historical complexes:
- the Engine Shop of the Royal Hungarian State Railways (1893/1894), today part of the Gredelj Rolling Stock Factory;
- the Zagreb Steam Mill (1907/1908);
- the Croatia Cement Works (1908) and
- the E. Moster and Co. Penkala Pencil Factory (1911).

The student designs on show were created over the past nine years in the architectural/town planning workshop, as part of the curriculum of the architectural design department, mentored by the head of department Academician Velimir Neidhardt, PhD, Vesna Mikić, PhD and Ljiljana Šepić, MSc.
While remodelling the structures in terms of content and function in accordance with the needs of contemporary society, the projects pay heed to the heritage features and respect the memory of the industrial complexes, pay attention to the broader urban setting and make use of existing structural potentials, creating as they do new value.
