In the exhibition Greetings from Zagreb, Zagreb City Museum responded to the invitation of the Croatian Cultural Community in Mainz, now celebrating its twenty-fifth year of existence. The exhibition also looks forward to the fiftieth anniversary of the friendship of the cities of Zagreb and Mainz, which will be celebrated in 2017.
The Museum is represented by one of its most valuable collections, the Collection of Photographs, Photographic Equipment and Picture Postcards. The collection was set up immediately after the Museum itself was founded, in 1907, and contains numbers of valuable objects: works in the oldest photographic techniques – the daguerreotype, calotype and albumin techniques, various historical formats as well as stereoscopic photography, down to the most recent photographic artists. The collection tells of the early perception of the photographic medium in Zagreb and the high quality of the work of the Zagreb photo-studios, as well as constituting a valuable document of the history of the city and the life of the citizenry.
The exhibition shows a selection from the Collection in six groups:
Panoramic and aerial views of Zagreb, which acquaint visitors with the changes in the urban development of the city, with its historical strata and growth;
Zagreb in photographic albums, which provides photographs of historical buildings and parks from the end of the 19th century;
A Zagreb that is no more – depictions of spaces that have been completely changed by time;
Life in the city – scenes from streets and squares, bathing places and skating rinks;
Modern Zagreb, with the finest examples of Zagreb architecture from the early and late Modernist period;
Contemporary Zagreb, which gives visitors a wider picture of today’s Zagreb and life in it.
Section seven presents part of the permanent display of Zagreb City Museum. Our museum was founded in 1907 at the initiative of the Brethren of the Croatian Dragon. It is now located in the Upper Town of Zagreb in what was once a convent complex that housed the Order of the Poor Clares, built in 1650. The permanent display, organised according to contemporary museological principles, portrays the city of Zagreb over the course of time in all aspects of its development: historical and political, economic and ecclesiastical, urban and architectural, together with its culture, entertainment and everyday life. Zagreb City Museum not only cares for its permanent display and the holdings from which it is composed, but also looks after five memorial collections, puttin on temporary exhibitions as well.
