In an effort to make the Zagreb City Museum accessible to all visitors, on World Animal Protection Day, October 4, 2022, we opened our doors to visitors accompanied by dogs! In doing so, our museum joined a handful of Croatian and an increasing number of museums worldwide that have opened their doors to people who spend their days in the company of man’s best friend. We are delighted to have made entry to the museum possible for our fellow citizens and guests in our city whose dogs are their constant companions in daily activities.
As a partner in the dog-friendly museum project, the Croatian Kennel Club assisted us with its knowledge and experience in adopting museum etiquette for visitors to the Zagreb City Museum accompanied by dogs.
In accordance with the etiquette, dogs may enter the Museum when accompanied by an adult who has paid for an admission ticket (the ticket is paid only for the visitor, not for the dog). Only well-behaved and obedient dogs are welcome. The dog must be on a leash, and the owner assumes responsibility for any potential damage. If a dog relieves itself in the Museum, the owner must clean up after their pet and inform the Museum staff. But have no fear—employees of the Zagreb City Museum love dogs and understand that such situations can happen.
Although dogs are welcome, for their well-being and the safety of all visitors, dogs may not enter the Museum during exhibition openings or visits by larger groups of visitors.
The Museum reserves the right to prohibit entry to dangerous dogs, that is, animals that display aggressive behavior toward people, as well as dogs that the owner cannot control and keep obedient. Service dogs may enter the Museum regardless of the circumstances.
We kindly ask owners to feed their dogs, take them for a good walk, and ensure they relieve themselves before visiting the Museum.
On World Animal Protection Day, October 4, 2022, we marked the beginning of the project of opening the doors of the Zagreb City Museum to visitors accompanied by dogs with free admission! We invite dog owners who are also history enthusiasts to visit the Museum, bring their pets, and stroll through the permanent exhibition.
The Museum’s entrance doors are marked with the sign “dog-friendly museum.”
At the opening of the Museum to visitors with dogs, Dr. Aleksandra Berberih Slana, Director of the Museum, stated: “One month before taking up my new position at the Zagreb City Museum, as President of the Slovenian Museum Association, I coordinated and on International Museum Day presented the national project ‘Dog-Friendly Museum.’ As the owner of two dogs and as a museum professional, I am happy that the employees of the Zagreb City Museum themselves proposed and supported the introduction of museum accessibility for dog owners.”
Iva Kranjec, curator of the Museum: “I thank my colleagues from the Zagreb City Museum, our Director, and our collaborators from the Croatian Kennel Club who supported this project, and I am convinced that it will open up new collaborations and projects for us and make working at the Museum even more enjoyable.”
Bojan Mataković, Secretary of the Croatian Kennel Club: “We are extremely pleased that the Zagreb City Museum has recognized the need for dog-friendly places in the city. We were delighted by the invitation to join the project, which we gladly accepted. We hope that, encouraged by this example, other museums throughout Croatia will also open their doors wide to our citizens and their best four-legged friends.”
